In 1973, the Government of Ontario exercised its option to purchase the Owen Sound Transportation Company and operate it as a subsidiary of The Ontario Northland Transportation Commission. To meet increasing demands of tourist traffic, the
Chi-Cheemaun was added to the fleet in 1974. It was one of the last large ships to be built at the Collingwood Shipyards.
